The application will enable Africans living in the UK to send funds or airtime within minutes to their home country in Africa and the Middle East.
MTN Group launched their all new and much awaited international cash transfers from UK to Uganda and parts of the Middle East and Africa, with plans to extend availability to users making transactions from the US, Europe, Australia and the UAE.
The service is available to smartphone users in the UK using the MTN Homeland app on iOS or Android. Cash can be sent to mobile money accounts in Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Niger, Congo, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.
MTN Homeland also supports MTN’s contribution to the achievement of the tenth UN Sustainable Development Goal, which aims to reduce inequality within and among countries. One of this SDG’s targets is to reduce economic inequality which is reflected in the price of remittances kept under 3% of the value of the remittance into Africa – MTN Homeland has been priced with this important target in mind.
Commenting on the service, Serigne Dioum, MTN Executive for Fintech expressed his delight at the launch of the App, saying: “We believe this offering will not only make the lives of our mobile money customers on the African continent a whole lot brighter, but those in the Diaspora too.” Dioum added that the company is working towards enabling remittances from the US, Australia, UAE and other corridors into Africa.
The new remittance app-Homeland is powered by MFS Africa . The platform will enable money transfer to over 80 million MTN mobile money wallets across 14 African countries, and help receivers access the funds through 500,000 MTN mobile money agents.
Isabelle Defoe, the Chief Marketing Officer at the Promota Africa, the UK multicultural marketing agency praised MTN services: “This is a great initiative by one of Africa’s biggest mobile telecommunications companies. As COVID-19 still devastates families around the world, remittances from Diasporas continue to provide a critical lifeline for the poor and vulnerable. MTN’s support of the tenth Sustainable Development Goal is a very laudable commitment that service users should be proud of. As the agency that was appointed to promote MTN’s invaluable services to the Diasporas, we feel privileged and also thrilled to be part of MTN’s progress and expansion.”
